Southern Counties 2009 Critique

Some exhibits had a lighter eye than I like, but expressions were generally good. Some feet were not good - too spread, too long and lacking knuckle. On the plus side many had good length and good height to length ratio.

PD (2,1) 1 Wilson’s Hamiltonhill Fred D Mercury. Very promising with a good head, correct eye and a lovely dark coat. Long cast, sound moving going, coming and in profile. I liked him a lot. BPIB.

JD (4,1) 1 Cheshire’s Kilbourne Nuin of Deeranwith. Nice light grey dog. Good head and expression, strong neck into good shoulder placement. A wee bit steep in upperarm, well angulated quarters. Moved well and holds his correct topline. Elegant dog with style. 2 Honeyball’s Wolfscastle Idole for Honeytail. Very attractive long, slim head with a nice expression. Neat ears. Nice length to height and balanced angulation. Moved round well but dropped his topline a bit and he is a tad close behind. Tail carriage not to my liking but overall a nice exhibit. 3 De Bolla’s Regalflight Mithras.

PGD (7) 1 Piggott’s Greyzicon Blythe Spirit. Tall, elegant and graceful, with a super head, dark eye and a lovely soft expression. Neat ears. A good depth of chest, well filled front, balanced angulation front and rear with excellent sweep of hip to hock. Moved fairly well, although a bit unsettled, but this did not affect my placing, as he made up for this with quality and type. 2 Taylor’s Kilbourne James Dene. Good masculine head but a tiny bit too strong for my taste and I’d like a darker eye. Nevertheless, he is a well made and handsome boy with a nice depth of chest, plenty of forechest and well off for bone. Very balanced angulation, low hocks and he moves well and steadily, coming, going and in profile. One of the few with really good, close and well knuckled feet. 3 Francis and Blatchford’s Closewood Acer of Peopleton.

LD (7,1) 1 Peach’s Readwald Thor to Kilbourne. Lovely long dog with a super head and neat, folded ears. I wish he had a slightly darker eye but expression was nice. His feet are not his fortune, having said that he is so beautifully made and very balanced. Good angulation both ends with no exaggeration. Good topline that he holds on the move, and his movement is very strong and sound. Res CC. 2 Trotman and Dockree’s Regalflight Princequillo of Penherald. Nice head with hazel eye and soft expression. Feet could be better. Very well boned, deep chest and a good forechest. Lovely underline, nice rise over the loin but slopes off a wee bit steeply over the croup. Curvy and eyecatchng dog who moves soundly. 3 Wiggans’ Killoeter Grilse.

OD (3,1) 1 Rhodes and Morton’s Ch Gentom Peacemaker. Lovely dog who fits the standard well and moves with an easy and flowing action. Typical head and expression, good neat and well folded ears. Balanced angulation, good topline which he holds on the move. Nice depth of brisket and shapely underline. A lovely curvy boy. I overlooked his long feet. Pleased to award him the CC. 2 Help’s Greyfriar’s Gille. Handsome, strong looking dog, really good dark and harsh coat. He has a very masculine head which is slightly stronger than my ideal, but he has a lovely dark eye and typical expression so important in the breed. His ears are too large but they are well folded, which is a plus, and he has really good feet. Strong neck, good shoulder placement,, fair return of upperarm and nice, strong and well angled rear. Good top and underline, moves extremely steadily with ease and drive. Very eyecatching.

Vet (2) A difficult decision, I loved them both for different reasons. 1 Lucas and Dargonne’s Sorisdale Mackenchie for Packway. No way does this elegant lady look or move like a veteran. Very fit and she floats over the ground, free moving and elegant. Completely balanced, no exaggerations and very feminine. Just lovely. 2 Kermack’s Beardswood Lustre. Very different type but equally lovely. More substantial than the winner but equally feminine and elegant. A quality lady with a truly lovely head and expression to die for. Not quite the free movement of the winner, she is more sedate but still sound.

PB (4,2) 1 Help’s Rosslyn Pollie. Enchanting 8 month old baby. Gorgeous, fine head on long and elegant neck, dark eye and typical expression. Correct, well knuckled feet and nice, close dark coat. Long cast and free moving. Very promising. 2 Barter’s Stainlonan Thai of Ehlaradawn. Just coming up to a year. Curvy youngster, stronger head than the winner with a dark eye and a good expression. Good feet, strong and well made and balanced body. Moved well.

JB (8,3) 1 Peach’s Kilbourne Teine. Lovely bitch who fits the standard well. Excellent head, neat well folded ears. Super feet and a deep chest and nice length of body. Well laid shoulder and correct return of upperarm. At the other end a lovely bend of stifle makes for very balanced angulation, with no exaggeration. Soundly constructed and well proportioned. Free moving. 2 Taylor and Peach’s Brackenland Tan to Kilbourne. Different type, more substantial all through. Deep chest, correct top and underline and well off for bone. She has a pleasing head and a kind, soft expression. Correct harsh coat. Shapely in profile and she moved well. 3 Owen and Brodie’s Wolfscastle Efa.

PGB (13,2) 1 Help’s Beardswood Octavia. I have never seen her before and I was smitten when she came into the ring. Very much the make and shape that I like, top quality with the most beautiful of heads and a dark eye. Her expression went straight to my head! She has elegance and strength, plenty of bone and a very balanced angulation. In profile she is stunning. Standing she tends to turn a front foot in very slightly, but moving she is completely sound and this is not evident. In fact her movement is true and easy! Res CC. 2 Bailey’s Kilbourne Jennifer Jupiter. Not as mature as the winner. I liked her head, eye and expression. Ears were good and neatly folded. Lovely long neck and a good front in all respects. Good, strong and well angulated rear, lovely topline with corrct rise over the loin. Excellent feet and she moves very well. Nice young bitch of quality. 3 Hird’s Cloweswood Scilla.

LB (7,3) 1 Janson’s Nixophel Crystal Amethyst. JW ShCM. Feminine with a good, long and fine head, correct eye. Well placed shoulder, fair return of upperarm and nicely angled quarters. Depth of chest and a good tuck up make her very shapely in profile. Good feet and a free and easy mover. 2 Bond’s Regalflight Moth. Very different in type. Typical of this kennel which always produces superb heads, eye and expression which is so important to the breed. Deep chest, well angulated behind and nice, low set hocks. She is very shapely, has not got the body length of the winner, but is balanced. Beautiful coat that has not been spoilt by trimming or over tidying. Moved fairly well and looked a picture. 3 Grimshaw’s Jamalison Melody.

OB (8,1) 1 Owen and Brodie’s Ch Marandike Ebonys Choice to Wolfscastle. I judged her 2 years ago in puppy and wrote ‘a star of the future’. She has fulfilled that early promise and now ticks all the boxes of our breed standard and is a perfect example of dog and handler moving in unison. Without any hesitation she was my choice for CC and BOB. 2 Bailey’s Ch Greyflax Waterloo Sunset. 5 year old and sound, well balanced top winning bitch of quality and type. All kinds of praise has been heaped on this lovely girl, there is nothing I can add except that she is a wonderful example of the breed and a great ambassador for the breed. 3 Peach’s Pinglehol Ruby to Kilbourne.
